Jean-Philippe Rameau’s Gavotte et six doubles was meant to be played on a harpsichord, but it can sound great on a number of keyboard instruments. Using Pianoteq’s virtually modeled instruments, I performed each of these famous variations on a different historical instrument to demonstrate the significant advances of the piano over time. Though the modern piano is an excellent instrument, there are many fascinating colors and characters produced by 19th-century instruments that merit further exploration. There are surely more noteworthy instruments than those represented here and this is intended to be entertaining/educational rather than comprehensive.
