EXCERPT FROM THE MOONRISE WARRIOR:
Vinh ignored the scrumptious-looking feast, her attention riveted on Jadaran’s wiry form. His hands were grasped solemnly behind him as he gazed out the tall glass window into the lamplit grounds.

Was this really the same boy she had shared all her secrets with? Did he remember she knew all of his? Vinh understood why this former hostage was steeped in revenge, but to go so far as breaking his promise…

There was no excuse. This here was a villain; she was ashamed she had ever called him a friend.

“Why now, Jadaran?”

At her words, Jadaran’s head moved slightly. Vinh was surprised but proud of how dangerous her voice sounded as it sliced through the air.

Meanwhile, the small Taumon stuffed his face, completely disturbing the tense scene.

“You want me out of the picture,” continued Vinh. “Why didn’t you do it at the capital?”

Jadaran remained stone-still. “They would’ve killed you,” came his toneless voice, “just to satisfy their bloodlust.”

“So, you’re going to keep me as a hostage.” She smiled grimly. Pull the wrong trigger. Draw him out of his indifference.

Jadaran turned around slowly. “A tempting thought,” he said icily, “but no.” He fingered a glass of wine on the table. “At the moment we cannot get a message to your father. Perhaps I should send an yêu-quái to fetch him for us. That could easily be arranged.”

Vinh’s blood ran cold. Her father, all of the royal officials, everyone hiding in the jungle—they were easy prey for the yêu-quái. Had she sent them to their deaths?

Jadaran was smirking now. Vinh scowled. Triggers.

“I want to know why you’re in this jungle, Vinh.” He inspected the wine in his glass. “And you’re going to tell me.”

Vinh glared at Jadaran. “Of course I’ll tell you. I’m here because someone broke their promise.”

“Oh?” he said smoothly. “And who might that be?”

“You!” Vinh shouted. Saying it out loud made her fury surge violently. She didn’t even care that he had made her sound like a petulant child.

“My brother and I trusted you, Jadaran. You could never have escaped on your own. You promised Khanh you wouldn’t attack his kingdom!”

Jadaran’s voice grew dangerously soft. “It’s not Khanh’s kingdom anymore, now is it?”

A wave of guilt drowned her anger. She was stunned into silence. He was right. Did this mean if she gave Khanh back his birthright…?

“None of that matters.” Jadaran set down his glass. “Khanh is dead.”

Vinh couldn’t mask her reaction in time.

Jadaran’s gaze intensified. “Unless…he isn’t dead.”

“He’s as good as dead,” Vinh replied tartly.

Jadaran turned toward the window. He was silent for the longest time.

Jadaran's little brother scooted his chair back. “Does this mean we’re going to look for another one of your friends, Jadaran?”

Jadaran glanced back, his expression masked again. “They’re not friends anymore, Dilan.” He walked behind Vinh’s chair, ignoring her gaze. “She is a threat. But he…he could be an ally.”
