Michael Tippett - Piano Sonata No. 1

0:00 Allegro
8:52 Andante Tranquillo
13:10 Presto
17:31 Rondo: Giocoso con moto

Like Constant Lambert, Tippett came from a cosmopolitan family, and spoke fluent French. Their period of study at the Royal College overlapped, and Tippett was also interested in African-American music, sharing Lambert’s admiration for Duke Ellington. Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Lambert’s The Rio Grande were possible catalysts for his integration of African-American influences into his compositions.

Certain features are inherited from the Beethovenian tradition, with influences from folk music of different nations assimilated to counter balance the ‘germanised’ and seriousness of the piano sonata. The first movement is a series of variations with influences of romanticism, Elizabethan virginal music, Scottish pibroch (classical bagpipe music) and Indonesian gamelan. Tippett juxtaposes different characters to exploit the contrast between variations, but at the same time unifies the piece with the constant use of octaves and 2-part textures. His harmony is tonal or modal throughout, as he rejects the extravagance of ninth, eleventh and thirteenth chords that typified Scriabin, Bridge and Sorabji. In writing this work, Tippett suggested the need to synthesise a variety of influences from outside the Austro-German tradition in order to write an original British piano sonata.
