Kitchen Cooked, Inc. Chips emerged out of the Great Depression of the 1930's.

During the Great Depression, Flossie Howard cooked her special Kitchen Cooked® potato chips to make ends meet. She lovingly peeled, sliced, and cooked the potatoes by hand in small cast iron kettles. She started the business from her home kitchen and later moved to a building that was once was a church in the small central Illinois community of Farmington.

The homemade Kitchen Cooked® chips quickly spread through Farmington and soon word reached other nearby communities. The fresh and tasty potato chips exploded! To meet the skyrocketing demand, the Howards began distribution in nearby communities with the help of Betty Ann Bakery delivery trucks. Flossie and her family ran the small but profitable business for nearly 35 years.

When Flossie’s health deteriorated, the Howards decided to retire and sell the business to local Hanna City resident Richard Blackhurst. In 1976, Richard built a potato chip factory in Bushnell, IL to meet the demands of an expanding market. Meanwhile in Farmington, Richard constructed another new factory in 1978.

Kitchen Cooked® chips earned themselves quite a reputation. Demand increased but was met by the high capacity of Kitchen Cooked®’s new processes and innovative direct store delivery routes and trucks. Kitchen Cooked® quickly distributed a massive amount of product to an ever-growing market. Not surprisingly, Kitchen Cooked® Potato Chips rapidly became a permanent fixture in central Illinois!

But with the growing presence of new brands and the scale of larger competitors, Richard’s son, Paul Blackhurst, started looking for a way to allow Kitchen Cooked® to continue to thrive and prosper. In Late 2019, Kitchen Cooked® merged into Utz Quality Foods, the largest family owned snack food company in the United States.

Utz Quality Foods strives to serve both local and regional needs as well as national needs and understands the importance of family and community. Into the future, both Kitchen Cooked® and Utz® brands will be found in more retail locations throughout the mid-west.
