This recording of a performance at the International Yoga Day 2020: Global Meditation Marathon Inauguration event on June 20, 2020 was my first online performance. On Zoom! While the vocal quality is not the best , I am thankful to Manoj Joshi for this opportunity and recording as it contains one of the several shlokas I learned from my guru, late Pandit Ramchandra Keshav Moghe and one of my favorite music teachers in school, Ms Kiran.
Today is Guru Purnima and I know whatever I do is not commensurate with the bounty from an immensely rich heritage of language, art, emotion, and spiritual wisdom that I received.
Guruji always told me that shlokas taught a music student proper pronunciation (uccharan), breath control, purity of notes, and how to focus. He taught me that music is a yoga, because it facilitates concentration and meditation, using our physical skills (in this case the vocal muscles) to ground and center us and tune in to our spiritual core. Memories of those long afternoon lessons where he had me work for hours on the same note or a single line of words are forever etched in my mind. How fortunate was I to have such wonderful guides?
I wish you all a very happy Guru Purnima. Always look for opportunities to learn as there is an ocean of knowledge out there and what we receive is just a drop in that vast ocean.
