At first, since I was a kid, I didn’t understand what they were referring to themselves as in the song, but now I know that they were saying Ornithorhynchus paradoxus (or-ny-thor-rink-us pa-ra-docks-us), which was the scientific name for the platypus back at the time the original “Dot and the Kangaroo” book was written (ορνιθόρυγχος [ornithorhynkhos], Greek for "bird snout" and paradoxus meaning puzzling). But now they changed the scientific name to Ornithorhynchus anatinus (anatinus meaning “duck-like" in Latin).
Hope you all enjoy.

Lyrics:
I’m an Ornithorhynchus paradoxus
And when you see me first, your in for quite a shock-sus

I have tail just like a tail, and fur just like a bear
And feet like an otter, don’t you know it’s rude to stare?
I’m really quite superior and I trust that you’re aware.

I’m an Ornithorhynchus paradoxus
He’s an Ornithorhynchus paradoxus

I am an Ornithorhynchus paradoxus
And when you see me first, your in for quite a shock-sus

I give milk like any cow and lay eggs like any bird
If you didn’t know me better you’ll say it’s quite absurd
And so the risk of being monotonous and in case you haven’t heard

I’m an Ornithorhynchus paradoxus (you heard what she said)
She’s an Ornithorhynchus paradoxus

We are Ornithorhynchus paradoxus
And when you see us first, your in for quite a shock-sus

It’s really quite extraordinary you won’t believe your ears
We’ve been living in Australia for 60 million years
We’re a well established family so give 3 honest cheers

For the Ornithorhynchus paradoxus
The Ornithorhynchus
The Ornithorhynchus
The Ornithorhynchus paradoxus
