Daniel Steibelt (1765–1823)
Sonata for Piano Four Hands in F Major, II. Rondo
Instrument: 1812 Schöffstoss (Pianoteq)
Performer: PianoCurio
Daniel Steibelt had gotten a bad rap for his reputed charlatanism and ill-fated duel with Beethoven in 1800. Still, he was a productive composer and innovator of piano techniques, most notably the tremolando, which was his signature effect in the 1790s and 1800s. This two-movement duet sonata is comparable to Beethoven's op. 6: short, light, and catchy. It is a great example of domestic music from this era and would make for a nice pedagogical duet today. The second movement is a particularly insistent earworm that lingers long after its final refrain.
