They are slowly eroding due to stellar winds. The pillars are located in the Eagle Nebula, which is in the Serpens constellation. The Eagle Nebula is about 7,000 light-years from Earth. The Hubble Space Telescope first imaged the pillars in 1995. The James Webb Space Telescope captured a detailed image of the pillars in 2022.
