Bonded Labor - Aaj Ki Ghulami (With Shehri Pakistan)

To our ears, the words of Bulleh Shah echo the lament of those stuck in cycles of debt bondage.

Pakistan abolished slavery in 1992. Despite this, according to the 2018 Global Slavery Index, there are approximately 3,200,000 people in modern slavery here. One of the most widespread forms of modern slavery is bonded labor. Bonded labor exists when a person is forced to work off a debt with free labor services. Many owners of bonded labor increase the debt using interest or food and living expenses as an excuse. In this way, a person who borrows a small amount, like Rs. 10,000 - 30,000, ends up working off a debt of hundreds of thousands of rupees. Because many of those who fall victim to bonded labor are illiterate, they do not know that their “owners” are adding to their debt or if/when their debt is paid off. Children get sucked into this vicious cycle and are forced to work as bonded laborers when their parents debts are passed on to them.

Legislation exists to combat bonded labor, but we need to raise our voices. Call your elected representatives, sign the petition, add your voice and push for a better future, one where the red of a brick is not from the blood of those whose only sin is to be born poor.
