Traditional roofing construction with clay tiles and mud mortar has been used for centuries in many parts of the world, particularly in regions where clay is abundant. The process involves using handmade or machine-made clay tiles that are laid on a wooden or bamboo frame, with mud mortar used to hold them in place.
The first step is to prepare the wooden or bamboo frame, which is usually made of sturdy, durable wood or bamboo poles. The frame is constructed to the desired size and shape of the roof.
Next, the clay tiles are prepared. In the case of handmade tiles, clay is mixed with water and molded into the desired shape by hand. The tiles are then left to dry in the sun. Machine-made tiles are produced using a mold and a press.
Once the tiles are ready, they are laid on the wooden or bamboo frame and secured in place using mud mortar. The mud mortar is made from a mixture of clay, sand, and water, and is applied in between the tiles to hold them in place. The mud mortar also helps to seal gaps between the tiles, preventing water from penetrating the roof.
Finally, the roof is left to dry and harden in the sun. Once the mud mortar has hardened, the roof is ready for use.
While traditional roofing construction with clay tiles and mud mortar is labor-intensive and time-consuming, it is a sustainable and eco-friendly method that has been used for centuries. It is also known for its durability, with many examples of traditional clay tile roofs lasting for several decades or even centuries.
