Temple No 2: Gokuraku-ji (極楽寺) – Naruto City, Tokushima
Part of the sacred Shikoku Pilgrimage, Gokuraku-ji offers a peaceful and less-traveled experience compared to its predecessor, Ryōzen-ji. The temple is known for its striking vermilion Niōmon (Niō Gate), weathered guardian statues from the Edo period, and a long, stone stairway leading to the main hall (Hondō), where a hidden Amida Buddha from the Kamakura period (1185–1333) is enshrined—designated an Important Cultural Property in 1911.

Gokuraku-ji is also home to the revered Anzan Daishi (Safe Childbirth Daishi), a statue of Kōbō Daishi linked to a legend in which he prayed for a woman who had suffered multiple miscarriages. She later gave birth safely, and the temple has since become a site for prayers of conception and safe delivery.

One of the highlights is the Chōmei-sugi (Long-Life Cedar), said to be over 1,100 years old and planted by Kōbō Daishi himself. Local lore holds that touching the tree through the sacred cords brings spiritual energy, family protection, and longevity.

This quiet, atmospheric temple embodies the spiritual depth and architectural grace of the early Edo period.
